SG Liquid Metal Collection

About Us

Sergio Gutierrez is an inventor, designer, and mixed-media artist best known as the creator of the original Liquid Metal Mesh, a revolutionary textile-like metal fabric handcrafted from ball chain. Protected by patents and copyrights, his distinctive mesh remains an original creation, making every SG Liquid Metal piece a truly authentic work of design.

Born in Colombia, Sergio studied Electronic Engineering in Medellín before moving to San Francisco in 1991. Fascinated by the challenge of transforming industrial ball chain into a fluid metal fabric, he spent many years developing an entirely new construction method. The result became the foundation of the SG Liquid Metal Collection, a unique mesh that combines architectural precision with remarkable flexibility, comfort, and movement.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship

Every piece is meticulously handcrafted. This demanding process gives the mesh its signature strength, fluidity, and sculptural elegance. Designed to move naturally with the body, Sergio’s jewelry has often been described as feeling like a “second skin”, comfortable enough for everyday wear while remaining unlike any other jewelry in the world.

In 1994, legendary fashion designer Betsey Johnson became the first major retailer to introduce Sergio’s exclusive designs to her stores. After relocating to Miami in 1996, his company experienced significant growth, with collections carried by Nordstrom, Bebe, Cache, W Hotels, and hundreds of boutiques throughout the United States and internationally. Today, his business has evolved into a direct-to-consumer model.

Sergio’s spirit of innovation continued in 2003 when he received a patent for his “Liquid Microchip” technique, transforming electronic circuitry into intricate decorative elements that he affectionately calls “the skeletons of today’s technology.” By integrating these unexpected components into his creations, he further blurred the line between technology, fashion, and artistic expression.

His original designs have been worn by numerous celebrities, including Demi Moore, Cher, Nicole Kidman, Sharon Stone, Tyra Banks, Toni Braxton, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Marilyn Manson, Sigourney Weaver, Thalía, Coco Austin, Anna Gunn, and many others, and have appeared in films, television, fashion editorials, and international media.

In recent years, Sergio has expanded his creative vision into mixed-media wall art. Combining his signature Liquid Metal Mesh with richly textured fabrics and experimental materials, he creates dimensional works that explore the relationship between precision and abstraction, architecture and emotion. This new body of work reflects his continuing passion for innovation and his constant desire to reinvent himself as an artist.
